Trenton Fire Explorers - Phase 1

Purpose:
To provide initial training to new members which will cover a basic understanding of fire & fire behavior, fire safety & prevention and basic fire service operations .

Scope:
Every new member of the Trenton Fire Explorer youth program will be provided with information in the classroom setting and given hands on training in the areas mentioned in the purpose. The Fire Explorer must successfully complete the phase by passing any and all exams by 70% and showing competence in any and all areas covered.

Preparation:
Each module will present classroom instruction, an exam, a hands-on training and a competency evaluation.

Agenda:
Module 1: Fire & Fire Behavior - Basic Definitions, Physical Science, Combustion, Classification of Fires, Energy Types, Heat Transfer and Fire Development .

Module 2: Fire Safety & Prevention - Evacuation Plans, Smoke Detectors, Carbon Monoxide Detectors, Fire Extinguishers, Hazards and Preventative Actions.

Module 3: Basic Fire Service Operations - Organizational Principles, Chain of Command, Training, Resources, Incident Management and Safety Standards.

Completion:
At the completion of all Phase 1 Modules, the Fire Explorer will be required to participate in an oral interview with an advisor at which time a review of all tests, exams and a determination of competency will be made.
A Certificate of Completion will be issued the Hot Shot when the advisor deems that person competent to continue to Phase 2.
